Unheard of

前代未聞、今までの聞いたことがない、未知の
something really unusual or near impossible

It’s unheard of for a baby to sleep through the night when it’s so young.
It’s unheard of to speak fluent English after studying only one week.

To tend to someone

~に気を配る、~の世話をする
to take care od the needs of a person

To take a step back

一歩退く、いったん離れたところから見る、譲歩する
You need to take a step back to get some perspective. 一歩さがって全体像を見る

intangible

触れることができない、実体のない、漠然とした
something that cannot be physically held or measured

The reward of taking care of children is intangible.

The intangible benifits of hiking are more important.

to hold back

思いとどまる、自制する、控える、ためらう、遠慮する

to hesitate to speak or act

They weren’t holding back with their questions.

I hope  you don’t hold back when you speak English.

By Nature

生まれつき、根っから

By nature, the prize in a family is the parent’s attention.
By nature, I’m more extroverted than my friends.

The squeaky wheel

My brother was the squeaky wheel in our family.

Headstrong

頑固な、強情な

Freddie is more headstrong than I was as a child.

To get / be glossed over

軽く扱われる
to overlook or ignore something or someone.

The middle child often gets glossed over.

To dread

~をひどく恐れる、びくびくする

Do you dread family gatherings ?

I dread going to the store during the holiday season.

To mellow out

落ち着く、円熟する
to calm down and relax

With age, I have mellowed out.

To be touchy

神経過敏な、怒りっぽい、扱いにくい、やっかいな

Theo isn’t touchy about the things that Freddie says to him.
Politics is a touchy subject.

Starting them young

若いうちから始める

Whenever we go hiling with our young children, other hikers often say, “Oh, starting them young!”

Starting them young is not a good idea.

Set(adjective)

adjectiveは形容詞。

set は、決まった、指定の、定められた

We have a set time of day when our children watch TV.

I like to have a set schudule for my day so that I can focus and get things done.

The elephant in the room

誰もがそこにいる(ある)と認識しているけれど、あえて触れずに気付かないふりをする
タブー、触れてはいけないこと

When she was arrested for drunk driving, it became the elephant in the room when she showed up to the parties.

Peers

同年代の人、同僚
Someone your own age, level, or experience

Teenagers really care what their peers think.

Peer pressure 同調圧力、仲間からの圧力

Whenever I need an opinion about something, I ask my peers.

Like-minded

同じ考え[目的・意見・好み・趣味]を持った、志を同じくする
Someone who has similar values, interests, or priorities.

We have different personalities, but we have been friends for over twenty years because we are like-minded.

Chores

Asterisk

アスタリスク、
to indicate that there is a limiting fact or consideration for something

We put ourselves on a budget, but there was a little asterisk to support organizations that we really care about.

To barge in on someone

Parents often experience their children barging in on them.

To be cut and dry

単純明快な

The election is never cut and dry as you might think.

To be at each other’s throats

激しく争っている、対立している
when people are disagreeing and aiguing

I’m not surprised that they broke up. They were always at each other’s throats.

I feel like we’ve been at each other’s throats a lot lately. Can we just be calm and make up ?
